Project in process: building a Hank Drum.

09 Dec 2010

I built this Hank Drum a week or so ago with the help of my illustrious friend Mr. Travis Kimmel. Travis is the owner of a well stocked junk-yard and with my purchase of an empty propane tank and some metal-cutting jigsaw blades + pneumatic angle grinder wheels, we build this drum in a matter of hours, in time for that night’s bonfire.

The propane tank is 20 lbs., bigger than I would have preferred, and the video here shows it prior to tuning (a task I have yet to undertake). This is the tutorial I used, with many many thanks to Mr. Dennis Havlina, the originator of the Hank Drum.

materials used: jigsaw, angle-grinder, pipe-wrench, vice, sharpie.

very neat! i’ve never heard of a Hank Drum, it’s got a nice sound. i bet it’s kinda quiet… i bet some wooden or metal thimbles would be an interesting way to play it.

also, from what i understand, purging a propane tank just involves filling it with water and leaving it open for a few days. at least, that’s what’s recommended before welding one, so it’s probably a good idea for anything.

thanks for sharing your projects and art!
